To hear him tell it, MR Seni Pramoj almost single-handedly kept Thailand from becoming a British colony after World War II.
First, when the Phibun government declared war on the United States, Seni, the Thai ambassador to the US, failed to deliver the declaration of war. Arguing the declaration did not represent the will of the Thai people, he instead founded the Free Thai movement, which worked with the American and British governments to undermine the Japanese influence in Thailand.
Second, after the war, he outsmarted the British, who were oh-so-close to getting Thailand to sign a treaty that would effectively have handed the responsibilities for governing the country to the British.
Instead, Seni gathered public support in the US, which was then used to pressure the British into being more generous with the Thai leaders.
