Prince Devawongse
Through Prince Devawongse, Siam's foreign minister for 40 years in the 1800s, Slam was able to cultivate a reputation abroad for responsibilily and for willingness to accommodate western demands and to reform along wertern lines.
The elder brother of three of King Chulalongkorn's queens, Devawongse served both Rama V and Rama VI.
He also played an important role in the design of Chulolongkorn's reformed bureaucracy, studying for the king the various ways that European governments organised fhemselves and fashioning a Thai model in his report.
